When you're practicing meditation, the intention is to find calm in the mind even when the rest of the world is loud and crazy. This concept means that even in the most turbulent situations you can still clarity and peace.
However, there's great benefit when you're starting your mediation journey and when you're a long way down the path to ensure that you have a retreat to practice your meditation in that's separate from the noise.
Giving yourself a quiet space to breathe out all of the chaos and then quiet the mind is liberating.
So, let's talk about 5 ways you can create your ideal self care sanctuary.
1.Connect with your senses
There might be some things around your house that already make you feel calm and encourage you to meditate. Pick 1-2 items that resonate with each of your senses. the reason we do this is to keep our senses engaged in the present space. Some examples are below:
Smell - Essential oils, Incense
Touch - Soft cushion, Comforting blanket
Sight - Candle, Plants, Artwork
Hear- Tibetan singing bowl, favorite meditation tracks
2. Find your space intuitively & dedicate it to You.
You might be able to dedicate a whole room to meditation, you may have corner of your living room available, whatever your options are the same principals apply. Finding a space that firstly feels right for you. Finding a room that is quiet and distraction-free can help usher you into this sacred time for self care.
3. It's okay to have boundaries. Setting boundaries is key. When you enter this space it's your time to breathe and relax, it's okay to protect this space from distracting or damaging energies. This is the reason why we strongly dedicate our space to the practice of meditation to ensure the intention of the room .
4. Lighting Makes a Difference
Meditation is not rigid, therefore the more accommodating we can make our space the better it can fulfill our needs. Finding a room that has lots of natural light is a great way to feel refreshed and energized. To keep the room feeling cozy, however, you do want some sort of window shade that will diffuse the light coming in.
Make sure you have the ability to have both options, because your mood can change from day-to-day.
5. No Technology Allowed
Relating back to our earlier point, boundaries are a good thing, so, no phones allowed. From the distracting ‘ping’ of text messages, emails, and phone calls —just say no to phones in the meditation room or place your device on 'Do not Disturb'
You want to be able to ‘get away from it all’ when you are meditating, and a phone will not allow this to happen.
